In the 1970s, Ms. Steinem confronted the newspaper’s executive editor about the honorific in an exchange of letters, pressing it to use the alternative to Miss or Mrs.Gloria Steinem, the founder of Ms. magazine, told the executive editor of The New York Times, “It isn’t possible to continue forcing women to disclose marital status when men are not forced to do the same.”
